Freya's story

We had already in 2000 decided that our next dog would be a retriever. I saw the word “toller” on a retriever discussion page on the Internet and started looking for more information. Quite quickly it was clear that we would get a toller instead of a Labrador retriever or a Golden retriever. I have always liked dogs with more than average temperament and tollers have that! In November 2000 I saw a puppy advertisement on Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Clubs homepages about a litter that would be born in January 2001. I called Vesa Lehto and we met the following weekend at the Winner dog show. A little later we went to see the mother-to-be Fiina and other relatives to Lemu. We loved Fiina´s lovely temperament and decided to get a bitch from this litter. During January and February we drove a couple of times to see Freya and in the beginning of March we brought her home.

Freya has a really nice temperament. She is soft and sensitive under some circumstances, but there is also some hardness when it is needed. She has a lot of energy outside and it might be hard to believe that at home she is very clam. Freya´s trainer has to have good dog reading skills, because balancing between Freya´s soft and hard side is a challenge. We probably made all the mistakes you can when training for the basic retrieving test, but finally things started to work and we started to get results. Freya was a little over two years old when she passed the basic retrieving test and nowadays retrieving is one of Freya´s favorite hobbies. Freya participated in some hunt tests in 2003 and hopefully in 2004 she will get some good results. Freya and Ari participated in blood tracking when Freya was two years old and got an open class 3. Blood tracking will probably be Freya´s main hobby in the future, she really enjoys tracking. Freya has also done some obedience training, Ari and Mari have taken turns in training. Freya thinks that healing is quite boring, but maybe practice will make it more fun. Freya has also done some agility and seems to like it too. She has also attended some dog shows and she became a Finnish champion before her third birthday. She has a lot of hobbies and concentrating in lesser hobbies might bring better results. On the other hand she is a versatile dog!
